The best AirPods 4 / Which Ones To Get ?

The best AirPods 4 :

So there are two types of people in this world: either AirPods fit in your ears, or AirPods don’t fit in your ears.

There are two types of people in this world: either you like silicon-tipped in-ear headphones, or you hate silicon-tipped in-ear headphones.

There are two types of people in this world: people who really need noise reduction, and people who don’t really care.

But Apple wants both people’s money, so there are two versions of the new AirPods this year.

It was a little confusing the way they announced it during the keynote, but essentially, for 129 there are the basic AirPods 4, but for 179 there are AirPods 4 with noise cancellation, but that’s not the only difference between them.

So now that I have been testing them for a few days, I can give you the verdict on them, what are the differences, and if they are really worth it.

So first of all, let’s start with the AirPods themselves, they have further refined the shape of these buds, and so they have obtained new curves and new angles, and the conductor points, a little more directly into your ear with less reflections.

The stem is also a little shorter, but otherwise, I mean, yes they still look like AirPods, they are very familiar, they have IP54 dust and water resistance, compared to IPX4 last year.

And they still have in-ear detection, there are still microphones all around, but my biggest question personally, before anything else, was actually just, does this slightly new shape fit my ear better? Because I’ve never really had any luck with hard-tipped AirPods, since they came out.

The last version was the closest, like I could put them in my ears, but if I was jogging for more than 10 seconds or so, they would slowly fall out.

So, are the 4 actually better for me? Slightly, but not really, I put them in my ears.

I twisted them a little, I do the classic, like, you know, make them sit in my ear, but it’s not for very long, they continue slowly, even when I’m just sitting, slowly, I feel like they’re coming out of my ear.

So, I think that if you have had problems with previous AirPods, you will probably still have problems with these, but if they fit in your ears, they will also fit in your ears.

Now everything I have said so far is true both, on the basic AirPods and on the active noise reduction version, they have the same size, the same shameful shape and everything.

Like, you can’t tell the difference from the outside of the buds, where the differences start, however, is this new case.

The case is a little smaller, it’s USB type C, but with the basic version, that’s it.

It’s just a case with USB-C, along with the noise-canceling headphones, the case also receives a small speaker at the bottom, so that they can ring when it’s charging, and that they make noise when lost, and they also have wireless charging on the back, (AirPods chime), which is super convenient.

One thing I noticed, however, there is no MagSafe anymore, I think because this case, is literally just a little too small now.

So, the latest generation of AirPods, the case with wireless charging, would line up and stick to the back of a MagSafe charger, which is really convenient for everything like dropping it on the charger, without thinking about it.

But this year’s case, you know, slightly smaller, I think it’s just a little smaller than the magnetic ring.
So it will still load on any cheat loader, but it doesn’t stick to it for any kind of alignment, which is a bit disappointing.

So if you have one of those vertical chargers, then you try to stick it on it, it will just slide off.

So USB type C, upside down, MagSafe disappeared, disadvantage, I also noticed, and maybe it’s just because they are new, but it feels like the magnets that hold them in the case, feel safer.

I think that’s a good thing, and this case still works with Apple Watch puck chargers, by the way, fun fact.
This is not a normal cheat charger at all, it literally only charges Apple watches and AirPods.

But hey, they always magnetize, so maybe it’s worth something, and then for the hidden feature that no one mentioned in any of the presentations, or keynotes or anything.

Remember on the back of the AirPods 3, there was a little pairing button?

So if you manually paired it to a phone or something, you would press that button. It started from the new AirPods 4 case, so where did it go? And now it turns out that this is a hidden capacitive touch area, a little right under the pairing light on the front, so you can press it twice, and then it starts flashing, which launches the pairing mode.

And in fact, a triple tap will allow you to start a factory reset of the buds, so no longer a physical button, some kind of hidden trick.

But the biggest question I’m sure most people are asking is this: how good is the active noise cancellation, on these new AirPods? Should you actually choose to get it without switching to AirPods Pro with silicone tips? Is it really good? So my reference point is going to be the AirPods Pro 2.

You know, obviously, there are a lot of other headphones that have an ANC, but just the sound quality, apples for apples, that’s probably the most direct comparison.

And I will say that although they are impressive, they are definitely not as good as the Pros, they just aren’t, and it’s most definitely because of physics.

So, like the hard tip, does not fit perfectly inside my ear one by one, it just means that there is a little air gap around the outside, just a little.

There’s a little bit of sound that can do it from the outside in my ear, literally around the earphone, so whether it’s white noise, street noises or voices, the ANC clearly works, and it does a good job of reducing background noise, so that you can hear what you’re listening to better, but it’s not quite gone.

So I feel like if the AirPods Pro are like an 8 out of 10 for noise cancellation, just based on how much background noise they remove, these hard-tipped AirPods are around four, maybe four or five.

It’s less noise cancellation and more noise reduction, if that makes sense as always very useful, but it’s especially useful in particularly noisy environments.

For example, if you are on a train, or on a plane, or with like a lot of loud voices or street noises around you, that’s when you will appreciate the noise reduction the most, because you can hear better what you are actually trying to listen to.

But if you’re in a quiet room, or a library, or something like that, it doesn’t really make much difference.
But then, probably just as important, as noise cancellation, every pair of headphones that has it should also have a transparency mode, and these do.

And this is perhaps the best transparency mode, which I have ever heard on all AirPods, it probably sounds supernatural, because literally some of the noise from the external environment is already penetrating, and therefore what it amplifies through the microphones should sound exactly like that.

Some other little information about it : The battery life, technically worsens slightly with the ANC activated, so it is rated for four hours, still respectable, but a total of 20 hours with the case with noise cancellation.

These also now join the AirPods Pro, with USB-C as the only other headphones to support,e the ultra-low latency of Vision Pro.

And then the precision search is useful, but this speaker really helps, if it’s somehow under something, or inside a bag, or if you need to find it, but you don’t really have a visual on it.

I love having the speaker on the case, and then if you were paying close attention, during the last Apple keynote, you might have understood that there was also a refresh of the AirPods Max, next to these.

But I use the word refresh, like very lightly just because all they really did was make it USB type C and new colors, and that’s it.

Literally, that’s why They haven’t done any other, no mesh updates, no case updates, no on/off switches, no hardware updates, no driver updates, no sound quality changes, no new features, no H2 chips, just USB-C, it’s absolutely ridiculous.

And I’m not going to review these headphones, but what I’ve seen are questions from people asking, for example, “Wait, what is the H2 chip about?

Like, does it matter that the new ones didn’t have the H2 chip? “Then let me explain to you what this is for.

The H2 chip inside these AirPods, basically does all the processing, especially from these microphones.
So all the improved background noise reduction for phone calls, all the active noise cancellation, Transparency mode and adaptive audio.

And it also allows you to nod, or shake your head to answer Siri’s questions.

So if there’s like an incoming call, and it announces a new call, you can literally nod to answer it instead of talking out loud.

Or if you receive an SMS, and Siri asks you: “Do you want to answer”, but you don’t want to, you literally shake your head, it really works very well.

But it’s also just a matter of principle, as it is impossible that your brand new headphones, flagship over-ear noise reduction at $ 550, do not contain all the latest, and best parts internally and externally, but here we are.

But anyway, the sound quality of these new AirPods is perfectly solid, some people were surprised by my opinion about it last time, but the AirPods 3 have taken a step, quite respectable forward.

And although there is still no equalizer anywhere, and there is not much customization of the sound, they do a good job of being decent at everything.

Because they have to make phone calls and podcasts, which have a lot of vocal frequencies, but they also have to make movies, and they also have to make music, and they’re kind of, just tuned to be solid in everything.

So in total, 129 for basic AirPods, 179 for AirPods with Active Noise Cancellation.
Now you know all the differences, you know what they do and how good they are at it, and you can choose the one you want for yourself.

Personally, I’m still a person who uses silicone eartips, only for my own earbuds, like, they fit my ears so much better, the sealing is so much better, it greatly improves noise cancellation, so I’m still looking into AirPods Pro, for myself.

In fact, you can get AirPods Pro on Amazon for about 199 right now, so it’s only 20 dollars more than those.

But I still think that people will gladly save the 20 dollars, and get the hardest ones, they are always beaten in individual categories by others, in the vast world of other headphones available on the market.

Conclusion :

Like, some will have a better fit in the ear, which will be better for working out and running and everything, others will have better battery life, and even others will have better sound quality, especially for music.

But they’re still AirPods, which means they work better with the ecosystem, with seamless switching, between all the Apple devices in your life, and they still have this kind of useful generic frequency response, across the board for everything, that’s what they’re good at.
