Samsung Galaxy Ring Review in 2024: I Wanted to Love It!

Samsung Galaxy Ring:

Samsung_GALAXY-RING

I learned a lot about the rings and about myself during the last week of testing the Galaxy ring.

It’s been an adventure, I’ve resized it, I’ve had some existential reflections, and at the end I may have a hot vision of smart rings compared to smart watches.

The Oura ring was released about 10 years ago on kickstarter, but the main point of these, the whole advantage of it, is that you can wear it, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

It has a seven-day battery life, so the idea is that you walk around as if you were living your life with a ring as usual.

Living, eating, sleeping, showering, swimming, whatever, just with a ring, and that’s honestly, the most impressive thing about the smart ring for me is the fact that it comes so close to the dimensions of a regular ring that some people would wear.

Now, keep in mind that if you have smaller hands, it will look bigger, but it’s 2.

6 millimeters thick, so it swells a little around your finger, but other than that, it looks normal. It’s not a small ring, but I mean it still is, I’m impressed by the amount of technology they put into this tiny frame.

And by technology, I mean a small battery and some pretty basic sensors, but when you put it all together, you get this all-day activity tracker that you can just put on at the beginning of the week, then forget about it, don’t worry about battery life, just wear it every day, every night, then just get a ton of valuable information about your health, sleep and energy levels, at least that’s the ideal use case.

Now, I’ve never worn a ring before, so there’s always a certain layer of getting used to wearing something on your finger every day.

But in addition to that, there are a few other good practices, like things you need to know about wearing this one.

So, first of all, there’s a good way to wear it, okay? All the sensors are on the same side of the ring aligned at the bottom, with this little notch.

So, you’re supposed to line up all these sensors, on the side of the palm of your hand, for the best readings, and then you’re supposed to wear it on your index finger for the best results.

So apparently, not actually, on your ring finger, so, once you get it right, all the information should appear in the Samsung Health app.

It’s about the calories burned, the steps taken, the number of kilometers traveled, and all this accumulates with this single energy score, which is out of 100.

So, I was wearing my Apple Watch Ultra at the same time I was testing the ring, and so, I look at the numbers back and forth, and it seems that the ring and the watch are very far apart.

Like the ring, I’m just going to say that it’s over counting a lot of regular activity, but then, it didn’t count as many floors climbed, for some reason.

So, I don’t know, there’s just, there’s a big delta between these numbers, and then I also at some point took the ring off for a while, around 22:00 one day, more on that later, but it kept showing heart rate ranges, all the way, until 03:00 when I’m definitely not wearing it.

It’s a little weird. You know, I did this challenge a while ago of walking 1000 steps, in a bunch of smartwatches, and with a pedometer and they were all within a few, percent of each other.

So, I think I’m leaning towards trusting the ring number monitoring, but that brings me to the importance of the size, because you only get one size, you can’t adjust it like you would a watch, right?

The Samsung ring sizing kit, you can buy it on their site for 10 dollars, then you get a whole bunch of different plastic versions, of the ring and they even have the pins inside for the sensors.

So, you try on a bunch of these, and you try to figure out which one fits the most, but won’t fall off, and that will be the ring size you get.

And then you get 10 dollars, on the ring itself, so, I’m talking about it because I totally did the size kit thing, either with the wrong finger, I did something wrong, because I ended up with a size 11 ring, which was a little too big when I got the actual ring.

And so, I noticed that because he was a little loose, he didn’t really feel comfortable all the time.

And then there were like gaps in my sleep readings, which probably meant that it was like I was being pushed out of my finger, while I was sleeping and I wasn’t reading anything.

So, I got a new size, I got a size 10 and then it felt much better, and by the way, it turns out that the index finger is a much better place to place a heart rate monitor, and other types of vital sensors than the back of the wrist.

It’s one of those weird secrets or whatever it is that no one really talks about with smartwatches, which is that the back of the wrist is a horrible place to measure all this.
But yes, the ring is where you should get this information.

Now, here’s what using this smart ring, for a while has taught me about myself.

All the advantages are still true, as it is more portable than a 24/7 watch, definitely.

It has this autonomy of a full week, it’s legit, you can forget that you’re wearing it after a few days in a row, and have many ways to wear it, it’s more versatile.

You don’t need to dress it up, or dress it up to match an outfit, it’s just a simple concave titanium design that looks great everywhere.

There are three colors, gold, silver or matte black, so, you already know that this matte black, feels like home.

I just found out that I’m not a big smart person myself, which is exactly what it came down to.

The main thing is the activities that I do that are most important to me, I can’t have anything on my hands.

Like number one, the ultimate Frisbee, a lot of throws, a lot of holds, golf, where the ring again just doesn’t work, and weight training, a lot of grip stuff, I just can’t get a ring.

So, for each of these main training activities, I take the ring off, which defeats the purpose of a fitness tracker, which is supposed to know everything about my physical condition, when it doesn’t track most of the exercises I do.

Now, I’ve kept the ring on for others like lighter plyo workouts, and there’s automatic workout detection, but with the lighter workouts like, where you don’t move fast, and your heart rate doesn’t go up very high.

So the automatic training detection didn’t work very well, at least for me, and the same for the sleep tracking, I had a few days, where it thinks I didn’t fall asleep until midnight, when I was in bed earlier than that with the ring on.

So, I was telling you recently how the cooling performance, twice as good actually helped me sleep better, and get more than 100 sleep scores, which is always the case.

But also the intelligence of the autopilot automatically adjusts the temperature, throughout the night and the elevation on the Ultra responding to the sensor readings, to find the optimal sleep conditions.

Thus, in total, the Pod 4s technology, is clinically validated to increase the total sleep time by up to one hour each night, and increase deep sleep by up to 2.5 hours per month, and reduce the wake-up time by up to three hours per month, and just as comfortable as the last generation.

So, I kind of like it, so, if you want to check one out for yourself, you can go to EightSleep.com /mkbhd, and get $350 on a Pod 4 Ultra or $200 on a Pod 4.

And with that money, you could have a whole smart ring, actually. But anyway, what I mean is that if I take my ring off for my most important workout activities, then it’s clearly not a great activity tracker for me.

And even for my lighter workouts, it turned out that the wrist, which I have on which there is a screen on it, although it is not the optimal place, and it is not the optimal form factor to wear 24/24 and 7/7.

I can tell, when I start a workout and I can actually make him track the specific periods, during which I use him for a workout, that I needed to know everything about.

So, the ring, I like the idea, but it’s just not for me, which is a real shame, because I like the idea that it doesn’t distract me with notifications.

It never vibrates, it never makes noise, there is no speaker in it.

It’s just this ultra minimal smart wearable 24/24 and 7/7, with a set of sleek features that you can wear for a week at a time, as if it were a bad idea.

And Samsung has made this nice little case for theirs, which charges the ring inductively from the inside, and has these little smart LEDs, to indicate the amount of battery remaining in the case and in the ring, so it can charge the ring up to 1.5 more times with its own built-in battery.

So, it is not intended to replace a smartwatch, it is just a different offer of a product in the same ecosystem.

But this conveniently brings me to my last point, which is that they have looked heavily at the ecosystem with the galaxy ring.

Thus, there are specific features reserved for Samsung where, for example, you can deactivate an alarm, or take a photo of a gesture with your Samsung phone, which is hilarious.

I don’t think anyone will do that very often. But it also only works with a Samsung Galaxy phone, this is according to Samsung on their website, so the Galaxy Ring can only be paired with a Galaxy phone.

Not just any Android phone, just a Samsung phone, so, I happen to be using a Samsung phone right now and that’s fine and I can test it, but if I were using a Pixel or something else, I don’t see what would stop me, from just taking an Oura ring, or an Ultrahuman ring, or one of those others, which basically, have the same set of features, but work with any Android phone.

Conclusion :

So, in the end, this ring is for people who already have a Samsung phone, and who prefer the portability of a ring to the functionality of something, like a smartwatch.

Because a smartwatch is clearly more functional, but less portable, so, everything revolves around this simplicity, which is probably the right time to mention the only feature, which I would like the ring to have, which is either like a kind of small speaker, or maybe an ultra wideband antenna, or something like that.

Something to make it easier to find, if you lose it, because if you lose it, it’s really hard to find.

As there is a Find My function in the application, which I can tell you that it gives you the approximate GPS position, depending on the last place where it was connected to your phone.

And he can turn on the LEDs inside that he uses to measure the heart rate, so, if it’s really dark, maybe you’ll see it visually.

But if it is not in an invisible place, as if it were in a pocket, or under something, or out of sight.

So yes, you have about as much chance of finding this as a regular ring, which yes, that’s what ended up happening to me.

The other smaller ring I was wearing before I had this one resized, at some point it fell off my wrist or my hand, and I just never found it again.
