iPhone 16 Pro vs 15 Pro :
If you are switching from the iPhone 15 Pro, to the 16 Pro or Pro Max today, I am going to tell you everything that has changed both the good and the bad, as well as what is disappointing, and I think you are going to be quite surprised by my conclusion, with this Apple iPhone launch really focused on the new screens, new camera updates, including the brand new camera control, and various small but really nice updates.
But before I get into all that, I have to say that I love the new desert titanium finish, with it so beautiful and it looks so much better than all those dark bronze leaks, which we had, and all the new finishes have a new micro-sandblasted texture.
But now we are talking about the features that matter the most, when we think about upgrading, the first thing we need to talk about is the display differences.
The new 16 pro model now has a larger 6.3-inch screen, s compared to 6.1 on the current 15 Pro, and as for the current pro Max model, this one has a 6.7 and the brand new 16 Pro Max goes to a 6.9, so both models have become 2 larger.
But one thing I was really excited about was thinner glasses, the new 16 pro and pro Max models have them the glasses go down to 1.15 mm, on the 16 Pro Max, which is actually the thinnest frame of all smartphones.
We also have a new display technology, now the display goes down to a minimum brightness of one nit, which means that the display always on, does not get as dark, which will actually help you save battery life.
But unfortunately we have the same maximum brightness of 2000 nits, we had a leak that would make us go up to 1200 nits of standard brightness, compared to 1000 but no, we have no change for the standard brightness.
And now let’s move on to the new performance changes, with the new AA 18 Pro chip coming, iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, we have a 16-core neural engine, which is actually the same as the one you get in the a18 chip, you basically get about 15% faster, Apple intelligence performance, we have a 6-core GPU which is 20% faster, than the a17 pro chip which is actually really cool as far as the processor is concerned.
We have a six-core, but it’s 15% faster fortunately, the a18 pro chip has a new video encoder, which is twice as fast, but what I think is the biggest problem of all these performance updates is the brand new internal chassis, with an aluminum substructure covered with graphite.
It has 20% better sustained performance, which is a huge deal for games.
Now to summarize all the performance improvements, the brand new a18 Pro chip, is not super exciting compared to the A7 Pro, in last year’s models, but if you are upgrading from an older iPhone model, all these chip upgrades will be a huge deal.
Now on to the new camera features, this is where it starts to get really exciting, and where it really starts to make sense to upgrade.
Widened Ultra bounce, which not only protects from falls from 32.8 feet high, thanks to its military-grade, 10x six-layer standard test loock design, but these new corners are actually part of the new defy CASE Ultra bounce fastening system.
Including the brand new utility lanyard, and the carabiner that support a bunch of different ways, to carry your iPhone protected, by an Ultra bounce case, like hanging it from your belt loop, and they also have their full range of Devi cases with updated styles.
Including the nice and slim impact case, the impact ring case, the updated bounce case which is now 5% thinner, and 11% lighter as well as some accessories such as their airpods case, their bounce Odyssey Apple Watch bracelet, and some other advantages such as their power supply via a 2inone charging station and a 240 W USBC charging cable.
Today first of all, the new iPhone 16 Pro models, have a new 48 megapixel Fusion camera, equipped with a second generation quad pixel sensor, which reads data twice as fast, which is a big problem, which means that you are going to have less shutter lag, in these very high-end formats like say 48 megapixel hif or Pro raw.
But the biggest thing that I’m very excited about, is the brand new 48 megapixel Ultra wide, which is huge, because because we have 12 megapixels on iPhones, for a long time, time and it’s just not good enough, especially for low light.
So now, finally, 48 megapixels is going to be a huge deal, and finally my favorite camera of all the 5x Tetra prism, is coming to the standard 16 Pro and of course we have the new camera control button, this has been leaked as a capture button.
So I think the camera control sounds much better, but it’s really cool, because it has a flush design, it’s not a real button, it kind of has a built-in pressure sensitivity with motion detection, so you can press it slightly, to say lock the exposure and focus.
Which is going to happen in an update later this year, but they have this really cool UI element, which comes out of the top of the screen and allows you to edit, and customize quickly and easily.
The settings of your camera, I think it will be a huge deal, for people who can practice with it, and for people who like video recording features like me.
The new iPhone 16 Pro models, have a 4K recording at 120 FPS, which is huge, it could be enough, to get some people to upgrade, and I love the new software that Apple associates with the 4K 120, which allows you to adjust the playback speed on the fly.
And now, with these main selling points out of the way, let’s go get into the little extra goodies, into various upgrades that make it a really nice upgrade, to first of all have four studio-quality microphones, which will help you with everything from call quality, and even allow you to record yourself to listen to music or anything else.
Because the microphones are going to be studio quality, this time in addition to that, we have WiFi 7.
Finally, on all the new iPhone 16 models, this is going to be a very big problem, because Wi-Fi 7 actually allows you to combine the different bands into one, and it seems to switch between them less, when you move away from your router device, but keep in mind that you’re going to have to get a Wi-Fi 7 router, for this to work, but here’s what’s a little disappointing with the new iPhone 16 Pro models, which I kind of expected something better.
First of all, you have the exact same Bluetooth 5.3 as before, so no Bluetooth 5.4 it’s a bit disappointing, you have the same Ultra wide chip, second generation band, no upgrades, the same ip68 water resistance as before, and unfortunately the same USBC speed of 10 GB per second on this port that I was hoping for a little faster.
But it seems that a lot of these small specifications, are not upgraded, but something that I did not expect to be so good, are the brand new wireless charging updates, in particular.
The current wireless charging is 15 watts for maximum safety, but the new iPhone 16 Pro models support 25 watts, so from 0 to 50% in 30 minutes, which is super impressive for wireless charging.
But you will have to get a new Max, safe charger to reach the speed.
In terms of battery life, we are getting a big upgrade this year, we are getting 27 hours of video playback, on the new 16 Pro versus 22, on the current 15 Pro and 33 hours of video playback, on the 16 Pro Max versus 29 on the 15 Pro Max, that’s a huge deal.
Now finishing with the case situation, Apple’s thin woven case has been abandoned, which was crap anyway, but Apple is updating the rubber cases, and plastic and they add a real piece of sapphire crystal, directly in the section where the camera control button, should help retain the functionality while strengthening the protection.
Conclusion :
Let me finally answer the question of whether you should upgrade to the iPhone 16 Pro Max, to be completely honest, if you already have an iPhone 15 Pro, or Pro Max model, you honestly don’t miss much because you have the same display technology, with up to 2000 nits of brightness.
You already have the action button, you already have the nice titanium, you already have the USBC port, the camera updates, it will definitely be a worthy update, especially if you like to use the ultra wide camera.
The 5x tetr prism that arrives on the standard 16 Pro, is also a big problem, which allows many of you to get the smaller model, but if you already have the 15 pro and pro Max, it’s not that big of a deal.
Now if you have an older model, I would say 100% definitive upgrade, you will love all the new features, especially USBC with all the camera updates, it will be so much better than what you currently have, especially if you have an even older model, Apple has definitely killed it with these new iPhone 16 pro and pro Max models.
