Apple Studio Display – 2 Years Later: Still Worth It?

Apple Studio Display :

It’s already been 2 years since Apple launched its popular consumer monitor, the studio screen, and there’s no denying that it’s a really beautiful and high-performance screen, but with its high price and some considerable pitfalls, it’s still a brilliant screen for some and a not so great purchase for others.

I will compare it to my previous LG 5K ultra-wide screen, to see how it has held up over the last 2 years, so here are some of the things I didn’t like during my time with the studio screen.

Starting with its price, it always starts from $1,500,199,and that’s serious money for a consumer-grade monitor this one, I set myself back from 299, because it includes the optional nanotexture glass and the tilt-height adjustable stand.

I’ll go into more detail about these expensive extras in a bit so yes, it’s expensive, but compared to the other Apple screen they offer the pro xdr, the studio screen is considered affordable, which I didn’t like although at this price.

It’s a little difficult to accept that some crucial features are missing, which are available in other screens in this price range, features such as local dimming with variable refresh rate and 120 HZ, and even HDR are all missing from this panel, these features would take this panel from great to amazing, and it would help relieve the pain when our wallets take a beating.

You would also think that we would get more connectivity options than just four ports at this price, it only has one thunderbolt 3 port, and three USBC ports, which means that I can’t actually plug in other devices like a PC or that’s a major setback.

If you had planned to use this monitor between several sources for quick switching, then there is the built-in webcam, I like how discreet and transparent it is, but as of today it is a really subar webcam Apple tried to improve the webcam through software updates in April 2022.

A firmware version has helped to improve the contrast colors and the overall image, in the best possible lighting conditions, it’s actually quite decent, but you won’t get the sharpness and the arc care effect of a dedicated webcam.

The smallest problems I have with this monitor include the fact that there is no power button, the only way to turn it off is to unplug it entirely or put it to sleep via the connected device, and there is also a rather poor response time of 20 milliseconds, which means that I should always expect a visible motion blur with fast moving content.

Now, what Apple’s Studio Display does well is pretty much everything else this 5K IPS panel, is simply stunning in terms of sharpness, color accuracy and viewing angles the 5K resolution, is extra crisp and I find the 27-inch size to be a bit more excellent sweet spot for this resolution.

The sharpness and clarity make a big difference between reading articles on Apple arcade and browsing on Mac OS every day, it is a significant advance compared to 4K panels, and even to my Ultra wide 5K monitor, 40 inches, where this monitor really surpasses its color reproduction.

It offers colors that are not only visually appealing to look at, but also accurate enough, for creative work such as color calibration, e in fact Apple’s support page confirms that we do not need to calibrate on this monitor, it is good to come out of the box with few or no inaccuracies, for color and white balance in srgb mode.

The color temperature is also practically perfect with the target of 6,500 Kelvin, so if you are a fan of using the technology right out of the box without any modifications, that is the only real advantage of having the studio screen calibrated, is if you want to use the Apple display P3 mode, 600 nits, which allows custom settings and brightness.

Speaking of brightness, although this screen will be in dark rooms again due to its low contrast, and lack of local dimming, so the other big wow factor and something I like to this day is the anti- brightness.

Reflective Nano texture Coating, it is still an amazing coating 2 years later, and it puts practically all the previous matte and anti- glare technical coatings to shame.

I’m sitting right next to big windows, and this space has a lot of sunlight, and so this magical nanotexture coating handles all this sunlight, like an absolute boss.

I point a direct light source towards and around the studio screen and it dissipates the glare so well, no matter how I look or place the studio screen, there is no reflection and this is a game changer for viewing comfort and readability.

It looks exactly what you want a monitor to look like in all lighting conditions, and it’s so pleasing to the eyes highly recommend the $300, upgrade especially if you plan to use the screen near bright light sources.

The viewing angles are incredibly wide, too wide by 178°, it’s ideal when I need to share my screen, say by showing a project on the screen with a colleague, they will be able to see up close what I see the vertical angle, is not as wide but still more than correct, given that you probably won’t be looking from extremely high or low angles.

Now, this is the tilt, and height adjustable stand that I added to and honestly, I’m not sure I would get it again because I have this desk shelf, and combined with the sit-stand desk that I use.

I didn’t find the need to adjust the height at all, I adjust the tilt if I’m slouching or standing, so I’d probably stick with the default tilt-adjustable stand, and put the extra money towards this Nano texture glass option.

But in another way, the support is really nice, it is milled from a complete block of aluminum adding to that signature look, and speaking of let’s take a moment to appreciate its design it has aged really well for more than two years, and still has a minimal beauty that remains unique to studio screens, and pro xdr.

Yes, it has thicker than average bezels and the panel itself is quite thick, but honestly, it does well and the build quality is exceptional, it is really robust right out of the box, so after using my LG 5K ultra-wide monitor, 40 inches, as my main for years.

Now, I was really hesitant to completely switch to a much smaller screen and abandon the entire real estate screen, but driving the studio screen daily, I adapted quite easily to the form factor, 27 inches, and the pixel density at this smaller size gives it an even sharper look.

I miss being able to edit videos on an ultra-wide screen of course, but other than that, the design of the studio screen has breathed fresh air into the configuration of my desktop and has significantly reduced its space, then there is a literal iPhone chip built into this thing.

The chip has 13 bionic, so it serves as a kind of brain, for its built-in features like the webcam and the Siri function, and the center stage.

The chip essentially helps to unload some of these features as much as possible, relegating it to the a13 chip of the studio screens, to allow the Mac to focus on more important tasks.

And this in itself helps to justify the high price of the studio screen, the inclusion of the chip also gives the studio screen the ability to receive software updates.

But since its launch 2 years ago, there haven’t really been any substantial software improvements, unfortunately, there are the space audio speakers also powered by the chip, and it’s really good that they have held up quite well over the last 2 years.

So I don’t use them for audio work, or for watching movies of course, that’s when I’m going to launch my airpods Max, but they’re great for just about everything else system sounds, watching YouTube, or listening to the occasional music, they’re a big leap forward compared to the really disappointing Mac studio speakers.

But the only thing is that they have I had too punchy bass and it’s not really spatial, it’s still clearly speakers that pull down under the monitor.

Let’s remember that they are only built-in speakers, the built-in 3 microphone array is also decently useful, this is what you are hearing right now in this large echo room, you are also seeing the webcam in action.

So the built-in microphone and webcam are what I used in video conferences, if I don’t have my dedicated webcam configured.

Okay, so 2 years later and is the Apple Studio screen still worth buying, it is absolutely a first-class screen, I think there is no doubt that it is probably not the best choice, for those on a strict budget, or if you are looking for a display with more ports, for versatile use options.

If you take a look at some popular Mac screens like the LG ultra fine 5K screen, or even Dell’s Ultra sharp 4K 32, they are both high-quality screens, in a similar design package, well suited for creative work.

And offering excellent color accuracy, or while saving you hundreds of dollars, but if you have the budget and you have found yourself immersed in the heart of the Apple ecosystem, you will find yourself in a hurry to find a better option than the Apple Studio Screen.

It is a monitor that works exceptionally well the anti-reflective nano coating, is so good and I always catch myself admiring its beautiful integrated design, and if the previous Apple screens of the past are anything to go by.

The studio screen should have a long reliable service life in front of it, and therefore in some ways its price of $ 1,599,is justified and in others it is not, but I think as an overall package.

Conclusion :

I am really satisfied with this studio screen, and I would say that if you have the budget and more precisely you have a good reason to buy the studio screen, let’s say for work.
